Observations

October 28, 2017

Our family has recently encountered an interesting experience. I can’t say too much about the details of the situation or the privacy of the involved individuals could be violated and I don’t have permission to do that.

Let me simply set it up by saying that expectations were not met and that lead to a large amount of frustration among those involved.

I’m struck by the importance of managing expectations. It’s usually not reality itself that causes us so much discomfort, it’s when reality differs from our expectations that creates so much havoc.

People are fallible. We all are flawed. During the last few days I got to watch my wife respond to a whole group of people who where dealing with unmet expectations. I’m proud of the way she didn’t lose her cool, which, ironically, perhaps, is exactly what I expected from her.
